Your First Hollywood Wax: What to Expect

If you are a bit nervous about going for your first Hollywood wax, you’re not alone. At Harley Waxing, we understand that clients can be uncertain about what to expect. In response, we created this step-by-step guide to help first-timers better understand the process and eliminate any surprises.

Pain expectation and management

The first question people ask is generally: How much does it hurt? This depends on the individual. Personal pain threshold, hormones, and stress levels all have an influence on the levels of discomfort. If you are really concerned about pain, you may take ibuprofen or paracetamol 30 minutes before treatment to help lessen the sting. Avoid coffee, alcohol or intense workout sessions just before your appointment. These can all increase skin sensitivity. Wearing loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fibres gives skin room to breathe, especially after your session, when things can feel a little delicate.

How Long Will It Take?

Again, this depends on the individual. Initially, a session can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Duration is influenced by hair density, texture, and growth pattern. Over time, as hair follicles weaken, maintenance visits will take less time.

When You Arrive at the Salon

Your therapist will have you complete a consultation card, explain the service, confirm any sensitivities, and step out while you get ready. This involves getting undressed from the waist down. Don’t worry, you’ll be offered a towel for modesty. The therapist will position you comfortably on the bed to support the lower back and hips and give them access to the area.

Skin Preparation

Your skin will be cleansed thoroughly to remove any natural oils or impurities. Avoid applying any creams or lotions to the area on the day of your appointment. Harley Pre-Waxing Oil, applied to the skin in a thin layer, will help wax adhere only to the hair itself and not the skin. Less pull on the skin means less discomfort during treatment.

Wax Selection and Temperature

Using a good-quality hot or film wax is essential for good results. Waxes with a lower working temperature that remain elastic when setting are gentler on delicate skin.
Our Harley Hot and Film Waxes are a great choice for Hollywood Waxing.

The Waxing Process

Wax is applied in patches, allowed to set briefly, and then removed with a quick, controlled motion. The therapist supports the skin and applies immediate pressure to help calm the area. They will also guide you on breathing and positioning throughout. Try not to clench. We know it’s a natural reaction, but clenching makes it harder for the therapist to reach where they need to to ensure a proper treatment. All hair is removed from the pubic area, labia, and between the buttocks for a completely bare finish. Your therapist will tweeze any stray hairs if necessary.

All Done

To conclude the session, your therapist will apply an after-wax product. These products help calm, soothe and heal skin.
For the next 24 hours, avoid hot baths or showers, intense workouts, and any fragranced products. Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing to minimise irritation. Skin needs time to normalise after waxing. After 48 to 72 hours, begin gentle exfoliation and maintain every 2 to 3 days to help prevent ingrown hairs, and moisturise regularly to keep skin supple.
Harley After Wax Oil or Aloe Soothing Gel are fantastic for salon use after waxing. Ingrown Hair Solution can be used at home to treat and prevent ingrowns.

Treatment Timing

We recommend booking every 4 to 6 weeks. After a few sessions, you and your therapist will be able to establish your own unique routine. Keep in mind that you may be more sensitive in the days leading up to your period, so planning around this helps a lot.
Remember, having regular waxes reduces discomfort over time by weakening the hair root, making it easier to remove. For the best results, keep up this frequency – even in winter! Why? It’s all about syncing up the hair growth cycles of individual follicles.

Relax—You’ve Got This

The first time is always the biggest unknown (and we’re sure you’ve encountered a few myths about Hollywood waxing!). Knowing what to expect goes a long way in reducing anxiety about having your first wax. Follow this guide, and before you know it, having a Hollywood wax will become just another part of your regular grooming routine.
